You can think of any plane of glass that runs parallel to an axis as the cut of that axis at infinity. The Miller index is the inverse of the distance from the origin to point of intersection, therefore, provides an index of Miller 1/infinity = Zero. BTW … The plane of the unit 111 is not a face: it cuts through the cube of the unit cell at an angle (oh, for a diagram! Imagine the situation of the pail in a corner, and cut through it in the nearest vertices – that make an equilateral triangle of atoms in a simple cubic structure). Based on what I said earlier, as the faces have indices (0,0,1), which is the side on the xy plane, and so on. Hope that helps … as I said, a little hard without pictures. … Update I realized I was talking about the unit cell faces, and no macroscopic crystal faces. That you can have face to 111 in a crystal. Fairly common, actually. For the structures of the FCC, which corresponds to the tight layers. You just can not face a 111 that corresponds to a face unit cell, but that was not what they asked.
