Limited Edition

The exponential growth of digital technologies in the past 20 years has revolutionized the market for the reproduction of art through digital media. This applies to the visual arts in film photography, as well as in music. Remastered versions of old – and not so old – films, classic albums archetypal images and photography are now common currency, and the market of these images has been revolutionary.

But this revolution has come a proliferation of terms to describe the different versions of the basic material and wannabee collector of fine art reproductions (for example) becomes increasingly vital to understand the real investment opportunity and marketing-driven hype.

So what are the terms currently used to define the additional value of a classical or popular image or movie? The terms used in the collection include popular culture concepts such as "special", "Deluxe" or "limited edition". These terms are often driven by the market, selling the same product base by marketing enhanced versions of DVD movies, music and video games. That this sometimes can be a simple matter of adjusting the packaging has the implicit danger of degrading idea of "limited edition" away from its meaning and value of the root.

The term "Collector's Edition "is also used. This is also a term that can be applied to various media such as books, pictures and recorded music and films. But it can also apply to cars and motorcycles, for example. A "collector's edition" implies that the number of copies produced is limited, but the restriction can stop at a very high number, and this should be known and understood.

Modern technology has changed the controls available with the concept of a limited edition. In the early days of printing and imaging playback, traditional engraving techniques can only produce a small number of high-quality images before wear and tear on the plate (especially in some techniques of etching and drypoint in print) took its toll. This means that delivery runs and acceptable quality images, but less. To limit the print run was a necessity, that modern technology Digital does not have to face.

Therefore, it is important for aspiring collectors to research the provenance of any limited edition the digital age. Of course, some collectors have a strong desire to have all editions of launching a personal favorite, or a classical piece. This in itself has its own value, of course. However, when the need is to understand the intrinsic value independent of an individual item, limited edition, then Provenance is vital for assessing the value of the investment.

In the case of the photo reproduction, printing the original artist, carefully directly of their work, and printed under the supervision of the artists are attracting value over time. The most common way of producing prints in the digital era collectables modern is to scan the original negative (in the case of images of traditional instruments of photography), or balance a digital file of a digital camera then the output of the image, retouched usually in specially selected media types using archival inks. Thus, coated papers and very fine can be used to make delicate, beautiful prints in certain limited number that can be certified and verified as authentic. Thus, investment opportunities genuine can come true.
